Standard colours of Italian military vehicles during World War II
The Royal Italian Army entered World War II with two main paint schemes for its armoured vehicles – a general grey-green (initially in a dark, later in a light version) and a general red-brown (Rosso Ruggine or Terracota), used mostly on Ansaldo vehicles. Both were often covered with green or red-brown patterns.
Vehicles sent to Africa were initially repainted in Saharan khaki in the field, and later (from March 1941) painted in this colour at the factory.
In 1943, more advanced camouflage schemes were introduced - destructive patterns of dark grey-green (or dark green for Ansaldo) and red-brown on a Saharan khaki basis (from May 1943), followed by a new "amoeba" scheme with red-brown and dark sandy yellow patterns on a dark grey-green (or dark green) basis (the final scheme used from August 1943).
