The commercial ideal of BMW from the very beginning was the production and sale of popular cars. However, the appearance of the six-cylinder engine together with the requirements of the Chancellery (1936) forced BMW to review its commercial policy and orientate production. This led to the birth of the BMW 328, the prototype of which was presented in June 1936. In the same year, the 328 took first place in its category at the ADAC-EIFELRENNEN circuit at the NURBURGRING. It was just the first of more than two hundred victories, including victory in the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans. The BMW 328 was produced until the beginning of the Second World War, in 1940, when 462 cars were produced.
