From 1925, the then Deutsche Reichsbahngesellschaft (DRG) introduced the 01 series as a heavy standard express locomotive as part of a restructuring of its fleet from many older Lenderbahn-era models to a fleet designed for uniformity and efficiency. By 1937 Borsig, AEG and other companies had built a total of 231 machines for the DRG. In addition, there were a further 10 converted Class 02 locomotives which were not convincing as a comparative design due to their only significant difference from the 01, a four-cylinder compound engine instead of a two-cylinder engine. The last pre-war model had a top speed of 130 km/h. Long after the end of World War II, the 01er could still be found on the tracks of the two new German railway companies. Partially modified, rebuilt on the old chassis and transferred to work on oil.
