[About the German Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf.L]
German Pz.Kpfw. The III, along with the IV, played an active role in the early stages of World War II as their main power tanks. However, when they faced the Russian KV and T-34 tanks on the Eastern Front, the weakness of the Pz.Kpfw.III was revealed and the balance of power tilted in favor of the Russians. Thus pz.Kpfw. III has steadily improved throughout his career to maintain his dominance. Pz.Kpfw. III had a number of types, from A to N. Among them Ausf. The L was produced from July 1942. As it was produced in an active tank factory, the basic characteristics and structure were the same as the previous versions with a few modifications. Armament consisted of the improved, long-barreled Kwk50 L / 60 tank gun, which was effective against Russian T34 tanks up to 600 m, plus two 7.92 mm MG34 machine guns. The armor of the front superstructure was increased to 57 mm in thickness, and 20 mm of armor was also added to the gun mantlet, which increased the tank's weight by 200 kg. The suspension system has also been stiffened to cope with the added weight. Powerplant was a Maybach HL120TRM engine, a water-cooled V-12 producing 300 horsepower. A total of 635 Ausf. L's were produced by the end of 1942 and many saw active service on the Eastern and North African fronts. Although its roll was soon replaced by the Tiger I and Panther, the robust chassis of the Pz.Kpfw. III was used for self-propelled guns until the end of the war.
