Developed by the American firm Bell Helicopter Textron, initially for the Canadian Armed Forces as CUH-1N, later renamed CH-135.

Canadian the armed forces ordered 50 helicopters, the delivery of which began in May 1971. At the same time, the US military ordered 294 Bell 212s under the designation UH-1N. The first flight took place in August 1968. Serial production started in 1971. In September 2014, the US Marine Corps decommissioned the last helicopter of this type. It is planned to replace them with UH-1Y. At the same time, UH-1N helicopters are still in use in the US Air Force.
