Type IIB Submarine (1943) Type II coastal submarines were the first vessels of this class to be built in Germany after the end of the First World War. Advanced submarines of the IIB series were built at Deutsche Werke (U13-U16) and Germania Werft in Kiel (U7-U12, U17-U24). All of them were included in the Kriegsmarine in 1935-1936. Two flotillas were formed from these ships - 1st Weddigen and 3d Lohs. With the outbreak of World War II, Type II submarines were actively used as minesweepers in ports and estuaries on the east coast of England and Scotland, as well as anti-shipping in the English Channel. At the end of 1942, six Type IIB submarines (U 9, U 18, U 19, U 20, U 23, U 24) were scuttled into the Black Sea. They were used there until September 1944.
