I-16 type 10 One of the first monoplane fighters with retractable landing gear was the I-16, developed in N.N. Polikarpov Design Bureau. The first flight took place on December 30, 1934. The "Type 10" modification, armed with 4 MGs and an M-25 engine, was produced in 1937-1939. 934 Type 10 I-16s were produced. These fighters took part in the Khalkhin Gol conflict and the Soviet-Finnish war. In the summer of 1941, I-16 fighters formed the basis of Soviet fighter aviation. They took part in air battles on all areas of the Soviet-German front.
