German forces were defending the Gustav Line while Allied forces were trying to break through to advance north and capture Rome. The combined forces included American, British, Free French, Canadian, Polish, Indian and New Zealand forces, all of whom were able to breach the German defenses in the town of Monte Cassino and clear the historic Benedictine abbey high on the summit. . A bloody firefight resulted in 54,000 Allied and 20,000 German casualties before the Allies finally managed to capture the Italian city. The latest set of Dragon 1/35 figures features the Allied soldiers who took part in this famous battle of Monte Cassino. In fact, this is a truly multi-national edition, as the kit can be adapted to New Zealanders, Poles, Indians or Gurkhas. This cosmopolitan set is unique among Dragon figure sets in that it includes three head options for each of the four plastic figures. Highly sculpted head options include Caucasians, Sikhs and Gurkhas, allowing the figures of the four aforementioned nations to be displayed according to the modeler's wishes. Examples of the four nationalities are shown on the top of the box. The details of the uniform and personal equipment are the same because these items were shared by these soldiers. The figures are shown in action poses as they advance through the wreckage of the ruined Monte Cassino in a brave assault, the details of the figures being sharply defined and molded. Commonwealth themes are often overlooked by kit builders, but Dragon here provides a valuable addition of subjects involved in the Italian campaign.
