The PT-76 is one of several light amphibious tanks developed and used by the Soviet Army. Although the PT-76 has light armor for a modern tank, its inherent amphibious capability outweighs these limitations. It was widely used in Warsaw Pact countries and many other countries. The PT-76 has a 76 mm gun with a maximum effective range of approximately 1,500 meters. Operated by a crew of three, the PT-76 is often used for troop transport. The fact that the commander is both a gunner and a radio operator reduces his effectiveness as an observer. The PT-76 also lagged behind other Soviet armored fighting vehicles in the lack of night vision devices and the RHCB protection system for the three-man crew.
