In 1943, the production of the Spitfire Mk.VIII modification with a retractable tail wheel and increased flight range began. These fighters served in the Mediterranean and the Far East with the United States Air Force and United States Air Force units. Some Spitfires received American-made Packard Merline engines and were designated Spitfire Mk.XVI. The planes of the last production had skylights with balloons. Spitfire Mk.XVI adapted to low altitudes as fighters and fighter-bombers and were used at the end of the war in Europe.
