The Mitsubishi F-2 was born as part of the Fighter Support-X (FS-X) program of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). In the late 1980s, the Lockheed Martin F-16 was selected as the basis for the FS-X and was to replace the aging Mitsubishi F-1 in JASDF service. The final design was slightly larger than the standard F-16 and, as a result, could carry more payload than the F-16. The F-2B is a 2-seat trainer variant of the F-2.
