At the time of gaining independence, Ukraine received about 240 MiG-29 aircraft. Approximately 40 of them belonged to the "9-12" variant, the rest to the "9-13" and MiG-29UB ("9-51"). Fighters of this type were fully or partially armed with seven aviation regiments - five in the Air Force and two in naval aviation. In particular, the 92nd Fighter Aviation Regiment (39 MiG-29) was stationed in Mukachevo (Transcarpathian region). Two regiments were located in Ivano-Frankivsk: the 145th (46 aircraft) and the 114th withdrawn from the territory of Czechoslovakia (the regiment did not complete rearmament with MiG-23s and had only ten new MiG-29s). The 85th VAP (34 MiG-29s) withdrawn from Germany in 1991 was stationed in Starokostiantynov (Khmelnytsk region), and the 642nd VAP (53 MiG-29s) was located in Martynovka (Voznesensk, Mykolaiv region). The naval aviation included the 161st VAP (Lymansk, Odesa region; about 35 MiG-29) and the 100th Naval Fighter Aviation Regiment, which was subordinate to the 1063rd Center for the Combat Use of Naval Aviation and was stationed in Novofedorovka (Saki, Crimea) . The last MiG-29 was armed with the 2nd AE (about 20 aircraft).
