In currently the F-16 is the world's most common 4th generation fighter, the main combat aircraft of the US Air Force. In 1972, a competition was announced for the creation of a light interceptor fighter, which was supposed to combine the advantages of the complex and expensive F-15 "Goal" aircraft with cheapness and ease of maintenance. The best projects were recognized by General Dynamics and Northrop, with which a contract was signed for the construction of prototypes designated XF-16 and XF-17, respectively, the first of which took off in 1974. The first serial F-16A took off 08/07/1978. In 1975 the F-16 aircraft became the object of the so-called contract of the century, winning the competition with the Western European F1E Mirage and Viggen aircraft. Several NATO member nations have chosen the F-16 as the successor to the F-104 Starfighter. The plane was exported to 17 countries. In this situation, the company started creating a modification of the fighter-bomber based on the F-16. In 1977, the plane was adapted to transport nuclear weapons. In the process of production and operation, the aircraft was repeatedly modernized. As a result of the research, an improved version of the YF-16CCV was developed, which differed from the prototype by the use of front controllable tails necessary for plane-parallel flight (moving up and down without changing the angle of attack and sideways without turning). As a result, it was possible to obtain high flight technical characteristics (especially in the range of 0.6-1.2M and at altitudes up to 7000 meters). The F-16 is superior to other aircraft of its class in terms of speed of climb and acceleration, including the F-1 Mirage, F-104 Starfighter and J-37 Wiggen, and has a 1.5-2 times smaller turn radius. The high-strength design of the glider allows for maneuvers with an overload of up to 9g. Characteristics. The aircraft was used in military conflicts in Iran, Yugoslavia and Iraq. Only 9 nodes. External suspensions can carry various weapons weighing 6,894 kg, including Sidewinder, Sparrow, and Maverick missiles.
