Hawker Siddeley Harrier (Ukrainian: Хокер Шидлей "Harrier"[4]) GR.1/GR.3 and AV-8A is an aircraft from the first generation of the British Harrier[en] fighter-bomber family. It was the first vertical/short take-off and landing (V/STOL[en]) attack aircraft and the only truly successful V/STOL fighter of the era. The Harrier was developed on the basis of the experimental Hawker Siddeley Kestrel aircraft, after the cancellation of the development of the more advanced Hawker Siddeley P.1154 supersonic aircraft [en]. Serial production began in 1967. The British Royal Air Force ordered the Harrier GR.1 and GR.3 variants in the late 1960s. The aircraft was exported to the United States in the 1970s under the designation AV-8A for use by the United States Marine Corps (USMC).
