The Royal Hospital Ship British Nickel was a White Star Line ship. It was one of the Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the company, and a sister ship to the Olympic and Titanic.

Britannic was launched before the outbreak of World War I, and then spent several months in a shipyard in Belfast until 1915, when she was used as a hospital ship to transport wounded soldiers and resupply. At 8:00 am on 21 November 1916, she was sighted by the German submarine U-73 in the waters off the Greek island of Kia. She was subsequently attacked with torpedoes, but due to damage control errors and chaotic crew management, the launched lifeboat was pulled into the propeller of Britannic, damaging her and causing her to run aground and sink. Of the thirty people who died in this disaster, only five drowned.
