The M706 Commando armored vehicle was an American wheeled reconnaissance and command vehicle, the first prototypes of which were built in the early 1960s. The length of the vehicle was 5.69 meters and the width was 2.26 meters. The drive was provided by a single 8-cylinder engine with a capacity of 202 hp. The maximum speed on the road was 88 km/h. The armament of the vehicle consisted mainly of 7.62 or 12.7 mm machine guns.
The M706 truck was developed as a private initiative of the arms company Cadillac Cage (now: Textron Systems), which intended to offer its products in export markets - especially in third world countries. This, in turn, meant that the new vehicle was characterized by a relatively simple design, ease of use and low operating costs. The vehicle also had amphibious capabilities. However, in connection with the Vietnam War, the M706 (as well as many other vehicles from the Cadillac Cage family of armored vehicles) became of interest to the American armed forces, who purchased these vehicles and sent them to their own forces in Vietnam or transferred them to the South Vietnamese troops. During this military conflict, the M706 was used as a reconnaissance vehicle, as well as to cover road columns. Currently, the M1117 is a very far-reaching development of the M706.
