In the mid-1980s, Hägglunds began developing an infantry fighting vehicle known as the CV 90 for the Swedish Army. Five prototypes were delivered in 1988, followed by three years of rigorous testing. In March 1991, the Swedish military placed the first orders for the CV90 series. The first production vehicles were delivered in 1993; over 500 CV90 series vehicles are currently in service with the Swedish Army, with production having concluded in 2002. The CV90/40 is primarily used by the Swedish Army. It can transport an eight-person squad and engage other armored targets and infantry groups. It is armed with a 40mm Bofors gun. The CV90/40 is mainly deployed alongside main battle tanks in Swedish Army mechanized units. The CV90/40C variant is equipped with a fully stabilized turret.
