The first prototype of the MAZ-537 was built in 1958, and the series model entered production in 1960. The engine of the new car could produce 525 horsepower at 2,100 rpm, which was an impressive figure at the time; only tanks and armored vehicles were equipped with such powerful engines. The fuel supply, cooling and lubrication systems had to be redone, and the engine compartment was covered with steel sheets. These changes and a reinforced chassis brought the weight of the car to 21.6 tons (87 tons with a trailer), which allowed it to tow vehicles weighing up to 50 tons. The first batches of the MAZ-537 were manufactured in Minsk, and by 1964 production had moved to the Kurgan plant along with the MAZ-535.
