The Grumman F9F Panther was the company's first jet fighter and the second jet aircraft of the United States Navy. It first flew in 1947. It was powered by a Pratt & Whitney J42 engine, a licensed production version of the Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet. Since jet aircraft consume a lot of fuel, the required range could not be achieved solely by fuel tanks in the wings and fuselage; therefore, auxiliary fuel tanks were added to the wingtips. The F9F-2P was a photographic reconnaissance aircraft produced during the Korean War, which excluded the use of a machine gun.
